Living in an Alternate Universe

Once again, a super hero movie does a wonderful job of nailing some key truths about our world, yet does it in such a way that it leaves God completely out of the picture.

Is it Hollywood’s job to teach us about God?  Of course not!  Is it the Christian movie industry' job to teach us about God?  No, it actually isn’t. But more on that at a later date.

For now, I will focus on the recent “The Batman” movie.  The problem of corruption in Gotham City is as staple of a theme in Batman as surface to air missiles is to James Bond’s cars.  How this last movie tackled it though, gives some humanity to the villain and puts the hero right in the middle of the problem.  If the villain is fighting corruption, can he be all that bad?  What actually separates the vigilante Batman from the villain, anyway?  Is it simply that he's not AS crazy?  Or, is Batman really the answer?  For the record, I really liked this version of DC's most famous superhero.

Yet, the main problem with these movies still persists.  Just like real life problems of racism, hatred, drugs, sexual assault, violence, bullying, etc. continue to be fought with the toothless weapons of legislation and the dead-end volleying of ideas on social media and at water coolers, movies continue to address real problems without any mention of or concept of or nod to God.

I realize that it’s much more entertaining to watch something in an alternate universe, but do we, the fans, really leave it there?  When we observe people living REAL lives in an "alternate" universe of do-what-I-want-with-no-consequences, it makes you wonder whether we’re all just hoping that there is a REAL alternate life waiting for us somewhere beyond this world.  "Maybe I can just live my next lifetime in a world where there’s no murder or hate?" we casually reason.  There must be a reason why there's such a huge market for alternate universe productions: Marvel has close to 100 movies and TV episodes that can be put in a timeline, for instance.  Star Wars has a similar universe going on, to the point that people have developed their own fan base on YouTube as a full time job.  One YouTuber, for instance, is advancing theories like Jar-Jar Binks is the evil emperor.  What if that is actually true?  Well, it would blow many minds, but it would actually make no difference whatsoever in any way in our day-to-day lives.

Here’s a test that I have not looked into, but I’d be willing to wager something on:  There are many Summer movies coming out in 2022 that are parts of a franchise or at least a sequel of something.  Out of all of these this Summer, out of all of these alternate worlds, how many worlds have God as a part of them, in any way?  How, then, are problems solved and chaotic plots resolved in these movies?

Having said all of this, I’m still a fan of such movies.  Why?  Because all truth is God’s truth.  Because no matter how hard we try to portray real human emotions and problems in a fictional universe apart from God, we will end up proving things that the Bible has been talking about for thousands of years.  As an example, let’s use the end of The Batman (minor, possible spoiler warning).  Batman realizes that, no matter who he puts away for however long, Gotham will never change.  Yet, he says that he still has to fight it.  Even after the observation that he may die doing it, he doesn’t relent.  Even after another tantalizing offer comes that could woo him away from Gotham to an easier life, the person trying to woo him says something like, “yet I know you won’t come, because you belong to another.”  Batman’s mind is already made up – he’ll never leave Gotham and go live the good life with his billions of dollars – because he simply belongs there.

Here’s the truth that God’s been talking about for, well, EVER:  We are meant, as humans, to belong to Him, to be on mission with Him, to be about something bigger than ourselves.  This mission, since God created us with that mindset already, is a mission specifically designed for us.  This is why, any mission apart from God, no matter how noble, leaves us empty and will fall short of truly solving any problems.  We are not meant for self-sufficiency or loving whoever we feel like or being true to ourselves, we are meant for putting others before us, for loving people in the way God loves us, and for being true to our God.  Nothing ought to draw us away from this mission, for once this mission is instilled in our head, once our love for God becomes a part of who we are, we cannot be convinced of ever leaving, for the world and others who are wooing us will realize that we belong to another.

Behind the COVID numbers - fear and hopelessness

I’m going to go ahead and tread on some shaky ground.

Death

  • Yes, 2020 will probably result in a record number of deaths in America, most likely as a result of this pandemic.
  • Yes, people that are physically vulnerable, especially the elderly and those with respiratory issues, must be protected and ministered to in a variety of ways.
  • Also, their are many people that are NOT at risk of dying, yet must be ministered to in unique ways as well, for each and every one of us has been affected by this pandemic.

So, without casting blame, but with the intent of helping us minister to more people through the gospel of Jesus Christ, I want to point out some numbers that we must not ignore.

This year, as of September 30, 1% of all Covid-related deaths have been people under 35, that’s 1,942 people. In 2018, the last year we have stats for suicide, there were 14,827 people in the same age group (under 35) that died from suicide.  All indications show that this number will go up this year because of the added stresses that 2020 has brought.

So, by the end of 2020, it’s not a stretch to say that deaths by suicide in America for those under 35 will outnumber Covid-related deaths in the same age category 6:1!

According to rollcall.com . . .

The nation’s suicide rate reached historic highs prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, with rates at the highest levels since World War II. Economic and social pressures this year have heightened the risks, worrying experts, health officials and lawmakers.

Suicide mortality rates that were rising over the past two decades combined with the current pandemic are a “perfect storm,” found a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in April. Factors include economic stress, social isolation, reduced access to religious services, overall national anxiety, increased firearm sales and increases in health care provider suicides.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness HelpLine has seen a 65 percent increase in calls and emails since March, according to the organization, though it is not a crisis hotline.

By the way, an additional 10,000 in that same age group in 2018 were by homicide, another result of people desperate and angry and hopeless.  For the first half of 2020, the most conservative estimate is that homicides have increased 15% in the U.S. from 2019.

We cannot, as followers of Jesus Christ, determine our focus by what everybody else sees as important.  Yes, we need to be respectful of those around us by doing something as easy as putting on a mask.  Yet, we cannot allow the news of our culture or the different ideology of our neighbor shut us down from addressing a bigger need in our culture – fear and hopelessness.  Maybe Jesus will or won’t keep COVID from your house, maybe Jesus will or won’t provide for all of the material things and money issues you have.  Yet, He will, beyond any shadow of doubt, provide for your most important need – getting into a right relationship with Him so that your life will be lived to the full.  This means a life (including an eternal, heaven-bound life) that is full of His joy, His peace, His strength.  Couldn't we all agree at this point that we'll take those things even if it isn’t full of perfect health, all the money we want, or relationships that always work out perfectly.

If you are in a right relationship with your Creator, you ought to have a perspective of death that does NOT elicit fear and hopelessness, but a perspective of respect and a hopeful anticipation of eternity with Jesus forever.

If you are not in a right relationship with your Creator, get it right.  Just like we are told to “get your affairs in order” when we’re nearing the end of their life, it is appropriate, when we are thinking more about death, to get our affairs in order regarding our eternity.  Did you know that Jesus, the Son of God, died on the cross in your place so that you can know, for certain, that you have eternal life.  You can know, not because you’ve done the right things, but because you’ve trusted the right person and followed the right God.  Give your life to Jesus today and he will not only give you eternal life, but He will give you joy and peace right now, in the midst of whatever this world may become.

May our mission NOT be about mask policies, but about how 2020 has unmasked people's need for a Savior, for hope, for something (someone) solid.

10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

17 By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. 19 We love because he first loved us.                                                                                    First John, Chapter 4

The Societal Cancer We Don't Address, Part 3 of 4

The Bible has all we need to live productive, healthy, fulfilling lives.  So, do what it says.

Even though we have not, nearly, perfected this life, there's a reason why we don't do what the Bible says.  It's because there's someone who has been granted rule over this world, an actual person who has one thing in mind:  bring as many down with him as possible.  Satan has a huge say in what is going on in our world.  Can you really doubt this truth?  How else can you explain the fact that, after all our history of hatred in this world and what it leads to, it is still alive and well.  Love is truly the answer, but we're ignoring the very source of love.

To choose love is to choose the one good choice.  Any kind of important decision that you or I make is either a good choice or a bad choice, there is no in between.  You're either doing it God's way or you're doing it Satan's way.  You're either going to address your sin and call on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, or you're going to ignore your sin and fend for yourself.  You're either going to admit that God's love is the only love that works or you're going to keep trying your definition of love.  What are you going to do?  The Bible gives the only clear definition of love and how to practice it - "This is love:  not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins." (1 John 4:10)

Remember the reason for this post: The inability to connect the dots between our culture of sexual harassment and our culture of open sexuality.  Part of why I will be able to never give up, never stay silent, and leave it all on the field once I die, is that slowly but surely I will care less and less about what people think of me.   I have no choice now but to be a voice that speaks up for the full respect of women.  I don't want it to be just publicized respect, or public relations respect, or a social media official statement, but full respect.  I have done this already by doing away with pornography in my life.  I will do this moving forward by contributing to every effort that would rid this world of pornography and I will speak out against how pornography and how our sexualized culture treats women and promotes them as objects.  Pornography, quite clearly, defines women as objects, not real, thinking, productive members of our community.  Let's be honest, the SI Swimsuit Issue is not really a swimsuit issue, for it's filled with swimsuits that nobody will ever wear on models who look (before and after the photo altering) unlike almost any other woman in the world.  It feeds into the fantasy world of men who say, "that's the kind of woman I deserve."  It feeds us the lie that women's bodies define them before their minds and hearts define them.

In my concluding post, I'll lay out what our role is in a culture that seems uncontrollably over-riden with sexual messages.

Earning a voice without losing your voice

Where would we be without the right person, at the right time, saying the right thing about a certain wrong behavior.  We can point to William Wilberforce and the slave trade in England or Martin Luther King Jr. and the treatment of African Americans or even Mother Teresa and the treatment of social outcasts.  They, among many others, choose to address and judge culturally acceptable behavior as wrong.

I will argue that what gave them that voice, is a combination of two things:  Their willingness to EARN that voice through their actions and their foundation being from something much greater than themselves.

Their actions not only prove how deep they believed in their cause, but their actions also go on to prove how ridiculous the cultural norm was that they were fighting against.

What gave them even more of a voice and what, ultimately, led to great societal change, was the fact that their judgments were based on a higher authority, voiced in the Bible by God Himself.  It’s clear that they were fueled by a higher calling because in each of these cases, they continued doing what they did until they died, without ever seeing much (if any) cultural change.

What is that cultural change that needs to happen today?  We need an accurate, thoughtful, respectful view of homosexuality.  The church, then, needs to be on the forefront of promoting both truth regarding what the Bible says about homosexuality as well as unconditional love and compassion to all people . . . ALL people, because they ALL deserve it.

Yes, I agree, the church has lost its voice because we have NOT faithfully done either of the two aforementioned necessities.  We have not accurately portrayed the truth of Scripture nor have we accurately modeled Christ-like love.
I started this blog in early 2014 and have yet to post it after tweaking it here in May, 2015.  As I continue to revisit this topic and observe how society is handling it, my original premise, which is based on Scripture being the authority, will hold true:  The current societal norm regarding homosexuality will eventually be found out for what it is, a submission to what feels right through the path of least resistance as opposed to a submission to what's right.

Well, now in March, 2016, our country has neither submitted to God's authority nor is even interested in His authority.  We are embracing Presidential candidates who see no need for a personally involved God in any way.  As a church, and as a church leader, we need to wholeheartedly embrace the principles on which the first church was founded:  Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name than Jesus, given to man, by which we must be saved (see Acts 4:12).  If you're not a follower of Jesus, I should do all I can to show you Jesus, NOT tell you how far off you are from what I believe or expect you to honor the Word of God.  If you are a follower of Jesus, I should discover, with you, what God's Word says about everything, NOT try to make the Bible say what I think it should say or allow cultural norms to determine correct biblical interpretation.

May we earn our voice the way Jesus did.  As He was approached by a self-righteous rich man who declared his own righteousness, Jesus knew how far he was from the Kingdom.  Yet, Scripture says in Mark 10:21, "Jesus, looking at him, loved him . . . "  There is a compassion and love for those who are "far off" that is missing from the Evangelical community.  By the grace of God, may we capture that and boldly live it out.  At that point, our voice will be heard more and the counter-cultural, life-giving message of Scripture will be heeded. . . only by God's grace.

When Actual Sin Meets Real Love

Why do we expect others to have the same exact ideas of morality as we do?
Why are we surprised when a person who believes something different than us makes decisions that we don’t agree with?

If we believe that what we stand for is the best way to go through life, what are we doing to try to convince others of this?
  • Get angry when their actions are different?
  • Make broad statements about their actions without addressing their belief system?
  • Sit in our cozy holy huddle and thank God we are not like them?
  • Love them with the love of Jesus, never compromising truth, knowing that God, not us, is the one what changes hearts and minds?

I vote for the last one and my guess would be that Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty would to.  Mr. Robertson was recently fired by the A&E Network for stating his view that homosexuality is sin.  Though his choice of words could have been better, his words, when taken in context of the whole article, make two things very clear about his beliefs:
1.     ALL sin is wrong, whether it’s homosexuality, bestiality, or adultery.
2.     All people deserve to be loved and cared for and spoken to with honesty.

Here’s where a little biblical clarification needs to happen.  God does not equate sin with someone who has homosexual leanings – temptation is not the same as sin.  Rather, just like any desire that I might have to lie on my taxes or watch pornography, the desire to be with someone of the same sex is not a sin until you act on it.  Allow the Bible to explain this (from James 1:13-15):
When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

When desire turns to action, whether mental action or physical action, we have crossed that line, said, “NO!” to God, and chosen to go our own way, which leads to death.  If you don’t care how the Bible defines sin that is your right.  At the same time, your belief doesn’t change what God thinks of sin, plus your belief communicates who your authority really is.

A&E had a perfectly legitimate case for doing what they’re doing.  If their authority is public opinion and money, then they should act accordingly.  Similarly, who or what our authority is will drive what we do.  What we do DOES affect others, no matter how we’ve chosen to spin it.  How we’ve chosen to spin it reveals where our loyalty lies.

Where is your loyalty?  Where do you get your right and wrong from?  What is sin and is it a big deal?  We need to each land somewhere.  Phil Robertson has landed somewhere, even if he hasn’t communicated it the way he could have.  The trick is using the whole of Scripture to guide our opinions on issues as well as drive our compassion for people.  This is why I’ll always stand for Jesus, because He did this perfectly.
